When Ryan Dickerson first stepped into his freshman dorm room at Syracuse University, he quickly realized that it was too small to create a comfortable environment to socialize with his new friends. That semester, he tried over and over to rearrange the heavy furniture in his room in order to create enough space for a couch, but in the end he couldn’t find the right solution. Ryan spent the rest of the semester slouching on his bed with friends, and left school that year with some chronic back pain.

During winter break that year he sat down with his mother, an interior designer, and came up with the idea of using a bolster to turn his bed into a sofa. In order to save space, he designed the Rylaxer so that it was lightweight and versatile, so it could be moved and stored in a small amount of space while it was not being used. He also designed the product with a Lumbar Support System ™ to keep him sitting up straight and relieve back pain he had developed by sitting in a poor posture position. When he returned to school, he became the only freshman in his dorm to have a sofa in his room. When his friends all asked where they could get one, the light bulb went on, and he decided to create his own business.

Today, the Rylaxer team is operating within the Syracuse University community. It’s three core members, Ryan Dickerson, Stephen Fox, and Case Wayne, are all current Masters of Entrepreneurship students in the Whitman School of Management. Additionally, the team relies heavily on the services of Metrenome3, a Social Media Marketing team based in New York City and founded by Syracuse University Alumni, Ryan Cuvelier and Max Kimble.
